So this is statement heard 'round the world. Steve Harvey announced the wrong person as the winner for the Miss Universe pageant. I was watching the pageant live and I had pegged Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as the winner and was really surprised when he announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner. I of course. accepted it because I wasn't judging the pageant itself and the judges probably saw something I didn't see. But to my surprise just moments later here comes a very sheepish looking Steve Harvey back out onto stage. He states that there's been a mistake, "Uh oh" I say to myself. Then I couldn't believe what my eyes are seeing and my ears were hearing. Was this actually the Miss Universe pageant having to recall the winner within seconds of doing so? "This is huge", I'm thinking.
So as we all know Steve undid his wrong within moments of making the mistake and Miss Philippines was properly crowned the winner of the Miss Universe pageant. In my opinion, I believe Steve Harvey handle his gaffe like a complete gentleman. He followed my four step process to dealing with mistakes to the T. It is as if took a page right from my book and handled this with class and style. They are as follows:
1. Acknowledge your mistake.
2. Apologize if necessary
3. Create a solution
4. Move on.
Steve Harvey did just this so I am giving him a virtual high-five. Although this is a huge mistake he'll be just fine I read on Twitter and many other social media platforms people were making fun of him and making memes and stating that he would lose his job. But he won't, as a matter fact, the Miss Universe pageant should probably thank him. For me I am a pageant junkie and this was like the Super Bowl for me so I was watching intently and really excited. But for the most part of this pageant tends to go on year after year unnoticed. Now it's on the radar not only are we talking about it right now but also next year everyone is going to tune in to see if he will make the same mistake it's already been rumored that Steve Harvey will be hosting the pageant next year I'm sure we'll all tune in.
So what will this do for Miss Colombia, the first runner-up? Well in my opinion I think it's going to help her as well. More often than not most media outlets want to hear from Miss Universe and the first runner-up pretty much goes unnoticed. But now this will be a great opportunity for PR for Miss Columbia. She's certainly going to be asked in interviews about how she was feeling, what was she was thinking, what she's doing now, and how she can survive from it. Hopefully Miss Colombia uses this is as an opportunity expand her platform and build her personal brand.
Steve Harvey did exactly what he was supposed to do which was just to acknowledge his mistake, apologize, create a solutions and now he's moving on. "The dishonorable thing would've been to leave it like it was," he said. "It didn't deserve to happen that way." he tols members of the press at the conference held afterwards. Good for him and I wish Steve all the best. I think this is the perfect example we can all learn from. Hats off to Steve Harvey for handling his mistake so well.
